Title: JMC History & Civics Education Intern
Division: Administration: John Marshall Center
Reports to: Manager of Civis Education
Position Status: Part-time; Non-Exempt
Rate of Pay: $12.00/hour; 10-15 hours per week up to 150 hours
Position summary:
The John Marshall Center seeks to hire a history and civics education intern for the 2023/24 academic year to assist with updating middle and high school lesson plans, creating new lesson plans, and assisting with ongoing education and communication projects. The JMC, founded in 1987, educates learners of all ages about constitutional history and civics and explores the life and legacy of U.S. Chief Justice John Marshall (1755 -1835). The JMC joined the Virginia Museum of History & Culture (VMHC) as a signature study center on July 4, 2023, and now serves as a hub for civics education throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia and beyond.
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Review and update existing digital history and civics lessons
- Research history and civics topics for new lessons
- Create outlines and rough drafts for new educational resources
- Assist staff with digital assets
- Performs other duties as assigned
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Necessary:
- Ability to research, synthesize, write, edit, proofread, and develop digital content related to constitutional history and civics
- Knowledge of and interest in current events, especially related to the judicial branch of government, American history, and Virginia history
- Proficient in G Suite and Microsoft Office
Education & Experience Requirements:
- Current law school student, undergraduate student, or recent graduate in history, legal studies, political science, education, or a related field
- Some graphic design and social media content development
Note & Special Requirements:
This position is eligible for university internship credit and is funded at $12/hour up to 150 hours. The selected candidate will work 10-15 hours per week.
