Marketing and Communications Intern - Virginia Mathematics Pathways Initiative (VMPI)

The Virginia Mathematics Pathway Initiative (VMPI) is a joint initiative of the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE), the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV) and the Virginia Community College System (VCCS) to consider how to modernize and update math instruction to Virginia’s K-12 students to prepare them all to be life ready and succeed in their post-secondary pursuits.

VMPI is a proposal to modernize and update Virginia’s mathematics curriculum in grades K-12 to align instruction with the essential knowledge and skills students need to succeed in the 21st century economy. The proposals would update Virginia's Mathematics Standards of Learning and Virginia’s public school divisions would then be responsible for creating courses and designing curricula to implement those state standards, as they do now.

VPMI is looking for a Marketing & Communications Intern to assist with this work.

Duties and Responsibilities could include:
  • Manage the development and production of VMPI’s marketing and communications, including multiple platforms
  • Collaborate with teams to create, develop, organize, and edit core messages
  • Create and maintain a content calendar
  • Work with content contributors to develop specific content/messages for timely release
  • Work with all VMPI teams to identify opportunities to promote the initiative
  • Manage the development and production of VMPI’s social communities
  • Create content strategy and maintain social media and community calendars
  • Write, curate, and edit content, including existing interviews and graphic elements
  • Create and edit emails, web pages, posts, tweets, and presentations 
  • Work with the VMPI team to create compelling visual images
  • Manage digital distribution, as well as promotion on the VDOE website and social media channels and search engines from a data-driven perspective
  • Manage digital distribution, monitor priorities and outcomes and gather analytics
  • Serve as an engaged and involved team member
  • Work within and across teams to ensure that decisions further the project goals
  • Other duties, as assigned.


Qualifications: 
  • Demonstrated capacity to develop and organize effective marketing and communications strategies including email, website, and social media.
  • Oversee the development of compelling and clear messaging and writing and ensure attention to grammar and style.
  • Time and project management skills.
  • Interpersonal and teamwork skills to seek input across the project, manage expectations, and implement plans in collaboration with other teams. 

Time Expectations:
  • Regular meetings Tuesdays, 9:00-10:00am.
  • Work to be completed by December 2021.
  • Checkpoints at the conclusion of each month.

Compensation:
  • $15.00 per hour, 10 hours per week
  • Not to exceed 150 hours without renegotiation of contract.
