Clinical Airway Research - Undergraduate

Under the guidance of a mentor, the selected participant will support a Defense Health Agency (DHA)-funded airway study at the Brooke Army Medical Center (BAMC). The study is focused on optimizing access to care for patients with urgent medical conditions. The participant will interact with government civilian scientists and military scientists. The ORISE participant will learn from military and civilian researchers and clinicians at the US Army Institute of Surgical Research and San Antonio Military Medical Center, & outside university collaborators and will take part in the facilitation of DoD-funded research focused on studying focusing on optimizing access to care at BAMC. The participant will be an active member of the study team and will be mentored through the process by the PI and other military scientists with the expectation that the participant is seeking to work progressively more independently as they learn.

Appointment Length

This appointment is a three-month research appointment, with the possibility to be renewed for additional research periods. Appointments may be extended depending on funding availability, project assignment, program rules, and availability of the participant.

Participant Benefits

Participants will receive a stipend to be determined by DHA. Stipends are typically based on the participant’s academic standing, discipline, experience, and research facility location. Other benefits may include the following:

  • Training and Travel Allowance

Nature of Appointment

The participant will not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DOD, or any other office or agency. Instead, the participant will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment.

While participants will not enter into an employment relationship with DOD or any other agency, this opportunity will require a suitability investigation/background investigation. Any offer made is considered tentative pending favorable outcome of the investigation.

Qualifications

  • Undergraduate student, or Bachelor's Degree received  in Cell Biology, Toxicology, Pharmacology, or STEM related discipline
  • Research experience of some type is required but not required to have human subjects research experience

Eligibility Requirements

  • Citizenship: U.S. Citizen Only
  • Degree: Bachelor's Degree received within the last 60 months or currently pursuing.
